Tracing its roots to 1842, TU Delft began as the Royal Academy, founded by King William II to train engineers for the Dutch East Indies and the growing domestic industry. In 1864, it was reorganized into the Polytechnical School of Delft, and by 1905 it had achieved full university status under the name Technische Hogeschool Delft. The institution adopted its current name, Technische Universiteit Delft, in 1986.
