Defensor Sporting Club

March 15, 1913 marked the birth of a new entity in Montevideo when two local clubs merged to form Defensor Sporting. The union of Defensor and Sportivo Uruguay created an institution designed to represent the working-class Pocitos neighborhood. From that moment on, the club carved out a distinct identity separate from the traditional giants Peñarol and Nacional.

The team calls the Estadio Luis Franzini home. Fans affectionately call this venue El Fortín. It holds roughly 9,357 spectators who pack into the stands to watch their squad compete in the Uruguayan Primera División. The stadium sits firmly within the Pocitos district, keeping the organization deeply connected to its roots.

While basketball remains a significant part of the club's history, football drives its national reputation. The squad operates under the guidance of Mauricio Larriera and Eduardo Acevedo. The late 1970s defined the club's most successful era. In 1976, Defensor Sporting broke the duopoly held by Peñarol and Nacional to win their first Primera División title. This victory made them the third team ever to claim the championship. That same year, they reached the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores, proving they could compete on the continental stage.

Success continued into the next decade with a Copa Uruguay trophy in 1997. The club also reached the semi-finals of the Copa Sudamericana in 2010. Despite these achievements, the team faced relegation in 2017 before returning to the top flight. Management during their golden eras included notable figures like Jorge Fossati and Marcelo Bielsa.
