Deep Water

Patricia Highsmith released Deep Water in 1957 through Harper & Brothers, marking her fifth novel. Originally titled The Dog in the Manger, this 288-page psychological thriller unfolds in Little Wesley, Connecticut, where wealthy recluse Vic Van Allen tolerates his wife Melinda's endless affairs without raising a voice. Instead of confrontation, Vic maintains a cold detachment that slowly curdles into something far more sinister as he begins to manipulate the environment around him.

Vic's quiet obsession with raising snails mirrors his methodical approach to revenge, while guests like poet Charley De Lisle and Joel Nash parade through their home oblivious to the danger lurking beneath the surface. The tension snaps when one of Melinda's lovers dies under suspicious circumstances, leaving the community to wonder if the Van Allens are responsible for the bloodshed. Highsmith strips away the polite veneer of suburban life to reveal a marriage built on mutual exploitation and the terrifying potential for violence.

After falling out of print for several decades, W. W. Norton & Company reissued the novel in 2003, introducing it to a new generation of readers. The story has since become a cornerstone of the domestic noir genre, influencing later works like Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl. A 2022 film adaptation directed by Adrian Lyne brought the toxic dynamic between Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas to modern audiences, sparking fresh debates about consent and power within relationships.
