    Overview

Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof is a love letter to the gritty exploitation films of the 1970s, wrapped in a modern slasher framework. The film centers on Stuntman Mike, a scarred and menacing stunt driver played by Kurt Russell, who uses his reinforced 1970 Chevy Nova to stalk and murder young women on remote highways. But the movie is split into two distinct halves, each following a different group of women in Texas. The first group, including radio DJ Jungle Julia (Sydney Tamiia Poitier) and her friends, fall victim to Mike's brutal attack. The second group, featuring stuntwoman Zoë Bell playing herself, along with Abernathy (Rosario Dawson) and Kim (Tracie Thoms), turns the tables in a spectacular, cathartic showdown.

Originally released as part of the Grindhouse double feature alongside Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror, Death Proof was later extended to a standalone 113-minute cut. Shot on a $25 million budget, the film grossed $31 million worldwide. Its raw, unpolished aesthetic, extended dialogue scenes, and practical car stunts divided critics but earned a cult following. The final chase sequence, performed at real speeds with no CGI, is widely regarded as one of the greatest car chases in cinema history.

The film opens in Austin, Texas, where Jungle Julia, a popular radio DJ, is celebrating her birthday with friends Arlene and Shanna. They head to a bar called the Texas Chili Parlor, where they encounter a quiet, scarred man nursing a beer: Stuntman Mike. He is polite but unsettling, making suggestive comments and staring too long. The women dismiss him, but Mike is a predator, and his 1970 Chevy Nova, matte black with a skull painted on the hood, is his weapon of choice.

Later that night, after the women leave, Mike follows them onto a deserted highway. He pulls alongside their car, flicks his headlights, and then rams them at high speed, causing a horrific crash. He then circles back and finishes off the survivors with brutal efficiency. The attack is sudden, violent, and shocking. The first half ends with Mike driving away, his car unscathed.

Fourteen months later, the story shifts to Lebanon, Tennessee. A new group of women is introduced: stuntwoman Zoë Bell, makeup artist Lee, and their friends Abernathy and Kim. They are working on a film set and are far more assertive and capable than the first group. On their day off, they borrow a pristine white 1970 Dodge Challenger from a movie star and decide to test-drive it on the open road.

The women bond over music, fast driving, and a dangerous game called Ship's Mast, where Zoë rides on the hood of the speeding car, holding onto straps. This joyful, reckless act puts them on a collision course with Stuntman Mike, who has returned with his Nova. He begins stalking them on the highway, and the women soon realize they are being hunted. The tension builds as Mike rams their car, but the women refuse to be victims. They fight back, turning the chase into a battle of wills and survival.

    Critical Consensus

Death Proof is a stylish, self-indulgent homage to 1970s exploitation cinema that features a brilliant Kurt Russell performance and a thrilling final chase, but its slow pacing and thin plot may test the patience of viewers.
