    Overview

Team Ninja brought the Dead or Alive series back in 2019 with the sixth mainline entry, powered by a new engine that overhauled visuals and mechanics. The fighting game retains the series' signature fast-paced combat and interactive stages, while introducing the Break Gauge system for enhanced offensive and defensive options. A beginner-friendly tutorial mode helps newcomers grasp the complex mechanics, making it more accessible than its predecessors. The story picks up after the events of Dead or Alive 5, following ninja Kasumi and others as they face a new threat from the organization MIST.

Released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows on March 1, 2019, with an arcade version following in Japan on July 18, the game received mixed reviews. Critics praised the refined gameplay, destructible stages, and helpful tutorials, but pointed out the lack of online lobbies at launch as a major flaw. A free-to-play version, Dead or Alive 6: Core Fighters, dropped on March 15, offering a limited roster and modes. By mid-2026, a definitive edition titled Dead or Alive 6 Last Round arrived on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows, alongside its own free-to-play Core Fighters variant. Combined sales of the paid versions surpassed 1 million copies worldwide, while the free-to-play editions accumulated over 8 million downloads.

    Gameplay

Dead or Alive 6 runs on the Katana Engine, Team Ninja's new proprietary engine that delivered a significant graphical leap for the series. The core combat remains fast-paced 3D fighting, with the new Break Gauge system adding offensive and defensive depth. Players build the gauge during battle and can spend it on Break Blows (powerful attacks) or Break Holds (counters). The gauge is situational, requiring strategic management rather than constant use. Interactive stages feature multiple tiers and destructible elements, allowing fighters to smash through walls and floors into new arenas, continuing the series' environmental tradition. A comprehensive tutorial mode breaks down complex mechanics for newcomers, a first for the franchise. The base roster includes 24 characters, with two new fighters: Diego, a street brawler, and NiCO, a scientist. Guest characters from Virtua Fighter that appeared in Dead or Alive 5 did not return.

    Story

Hayate investigates the perpetrators behind a trap set on an oil platform that exploded at the end of Dead or Alive 5. Zack organizes another Dead or Alive tournament, drawing fighters into a conflict between the ninja clan and DOATEC against the organization M.I.S.T., led by a new antagonist. Diego, a street brawler from a rough neighborhood, enters the tournament pursuing a romantic interest among the female cast. The story mode weaves these threads together, though critics found it slightly undercooked compared to the gameplay.
