DC Universe Online

In 2011, a game launched that let players finally step into the spandex of their own custom superhero or supervillain. DC Universe Online, developed by Daybreak Game Company (then Sony Online Entertainment), arrived on PlayStation 3 and PC. It dropped players into a living comic book world where Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman were real, and Brainiac was turning Earth into a giant database.

The game's hook was simple: create a character from scratch, choosing from dozens of powers like fire, ice, or telekinesis, and pick a movement style, flight, super-speed, or acrobatics. Then align with either the heroes or villains and start fighting. Combat is real-time, not the usual point-and-click MMO fare. You dodge, block, and chain combos with a controller in hand. It feels more like a brawler than a traditional RPG.

Over the years, the game expanded across nearly every major platform: PlayStation 4 in 2013, Xbox One in 2016, Nintendo Switch in 2019, and backward compatibility on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It went free-to-play in November 2011, just ten months after launch, and the player base exploded. By 2016, over 18 million accounts had been registered. The game is still running, with regular DLC episodes that add new zones, gear, and storylines, from the Joker's Last Laugh to the Death of Superman.[edit]

Combat in DC Universe Online is built around a controller-friendly system. You have a basic attack, a block button, and a set of power trays mapped to the shoulder buttons. Each power set, from Gadgets to Sorcery, comes with distinct animations and effects. Weapons range from fists and rifles to staffs and dual pistols. You can chain light and heavy attacks into finishers, then break out a superpower like a heat vision blast or a shield of ice.

Missions are instanced for groups of two, four, or eight players. Duos are for two, Alerts for four, and Raids for eight. These are the game's meat: coordinated fights against bosses like Darkseid or the Joker, with mechanics that require communication. Outside instances, the open world is split into zones like Gotham City, Metropolis, and the Watchtower. You can fly across rooftops, fight random thugs, or hunt for collection items that unlock style pieces.

PvP comes in two flavors: Arenas (4v4 or 8v8) and Legends PvP, where you control iconic DC characters like Batman or Harley Quinn. Leagues, the game's guilds, can hold up to 256 members. They get their own lair, a customizable base where you can place trophies, vendors, and training dummies. The game also features a mentor system: choose Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman as your guide, and you'll get different early missions and a unique mentor-specific power.[edit]

The game opens with a funeral. The Justice League is dead, killed by a future Lex Luthor who merged with Brainiac. Batman, dying, sends a message back in time: stop Luthor before he gets that power. You wake up in the present, an ordinary citizen, until an Exobyte, a nanite from Brainiac's invasion, hits you and grants superpowers. From there, you choose a side: join the heroes under the Watchtower's banner, or the villains answering to the Hall of Doom.

The early story missions send you against Brainiac's forces, who are assimilating cities into data. You fight through Metropolis and Gotham, meeting allies like Oracle and villains like the Riddler. The narrative branches depending on your alignment. Heroes get missions from the Justice League; villains get orders from Lex Luthor or Circe. The main arc culminates in a raid on Brainiac's ship, but the story doesn't end there.

Later DLCs expand the world. The Last Laugh takes you to an amusement park turned death trap by the Joker. Lightning Strikes introduces Shazam and the Rock of Eternity. Amazon Fury pits you against the Amazons. The Death of Superman adapts the famous comic storyline, letting players fight Doomsday. Each episode adds new cutscenes, voiced by actors from the DC animated universe, Kevin Conroy as Batman, Mark Hamill as the Joker, Tim Daly as Superman.[edit]
