    Overview

On May 28, 1976, the seniors at Lee High School in Austin, Texas, have one thing on their minds: hazing the incoming freshmen. Richard Linklater's second feature captures that single day and night with an episodic, hangout vibe that feels less like a plotted story and more like a fading Polaroid. The film cost just $6.9 million and grossed a modest $8.3 million in its initial run, but it found its real life on home video, becoming a touchstone for anyone who ever cruised aimlessly with friends, blasted Foghat, or wondered what came next.

Linklater drew directly from his own high school years in Huntsville, Texas, and cast mostly unknown actors, many of whom were close to their characters' ages. Matthew McConaughey, in his film debut, turned a small part into the scene-stealing Wooderson with his iconic line about getting older and staying the same age. The film's soundtrack, built from 1970s radio staples like Alice Cooper and Lynyrd Skynyrd, is as essential as any character, setting a mood of sun-baked freedom and cheap beer.

The final bell rings at Lee High School, and chaos erupts. Seniors hunt down freshmen for ritual paddlings, and the hallways buzz with plans for the night. Randall Pink Floyd, the star quarterback, feels the weight of expectation. His coach pressures him to sign a no-drug, no-alcohol pledge before the football banquet. Pink resists, sensing that signing means surrendering the very freedom he and his friends are celebrating.

Pink's circle includes the quiet, observant Mike Newhouse, the perpetually stoned Slater, and the easygoing Don. They cruise in Don's muscle car, smoking joints and debating the meaning of high school hierarchies. Meanwhile, Wooderson, a twentysomething who never left the scene, rolls up in his Chevelle, offering beer and cryptic wisdom to anyone who'll listen.

Down the social ladder, freshmen Mitch Kramer and his friends try to survive the day. Mitch gets cornered by the sadistic senior O'Bannion, who delivers a brutal paddling that leaves Mitch bruised but unbowed. Later, Mitch's older sister Jodi and her friends take him under their wing, introducing him to a party scene he's too young for but eager to join.

The night unfolds in a series of connected moments. There is a keg party at a moon tower, where kids drink, dance, and pair off. Pink and his friends drift from the party to an arcade, then to a field where they play a chaotic game of football. O'Bannion, still nursing his own grudges, tries to reclaim his lost authority but finds himself increasingly isolated.

As midnight approaches, the crowd converges at the Top Notch drive-in, a local hangout where cars line up and social circles merge. Pink, after a long talk with the thoughtful Cynthia, decides he won't sign the pledge. He joins his friends for a final round of laser tag, a surreal, glowing game that erases the lines between freshmen and seniors, jocks and burnouts.
