David Lynch's accolades span film, television, and the arts. He is one of the few directors to earn three Academy Award nominations for Best Director without winning, but he received an Honorary Oscar in 2019 for his singular vision. His Palme d'Or and Cannes Best Director wins place him among the most honored filmmakers at that festival. The Independent Spirit Awards recognized his independent spirit twice. His television work on Twin Peaks earned nine Emmy nominations, a rare achievement for a director in the 1990s. The Venice Film Festival awarded him a Career Golden Lion in 2006, and the Directors Guild of America gave him a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019.
