DARLING in the FRANXX

In a future where humanity has retreated to mobile fortress cities called Plantations, the only defense against the monstrous Klaxosaurs are giant mecha known as FRANXX. These machines require a male-female pilot pair, children raised in isolation and trained from birth as Parasites. The story follows Hiro, a former prodigy who lost his ability to pilot, and Zero Two, a mysterious girl with red horns and klaxosaur blood. Together they pilot the unique FRANXX Strelizia, forging a bond that challenges the very foundations of their society.

Produced by a collaboration between CloverWorks, TRIGGER, and A-1 Pictures, the series aired on Tokyo MX from January 13 to July 7, 2018, spanning 24 episodes. Directed by Atsushi Nishigori and written by Naotaka Hayashi and Nishigori, the show blends mecha action with coming-of-age drama and romance. The opening theme "Kiss of Death" by Mika Nakashima featuring Hyde became a hit, and the character Zero Two quickly became an icon in anime fandom.

The series earned a TMDB rating of 8.5 from nearly 2,000 votes and holds an IMDb score of 7.4 with over 60,000 votes. It was nominated for several Newtype Anime Awards, with Zero Two winning Best Female Character. Humanity clings to existence inside massive mobile fortresses called Plantations, constantly threatened by giant creatures known as Klaxosaurs. To fight them, genetically engineered children known as Parasites are raised in boarding schools, stripped of personal history and emotion. They pilot FRANXX, mecha that require a male-female pair to operate, with the girl serving as the "pistil" and the boy as the "stamen." The story begins with Hiro, once hailed as a prodigy, now unable to synchronize with any partner. He feels like a failure, watching his friends pilot while he is relegated to maintenance work.

Everything changes when he meets Zero Two, a pilot with red horns and klaxosaur blood who is feared for her tendency to drain her partners to death. She calls Hiro her "darling" and, against all odds, they successfully pilot the FRANXX Strelizia together. Their partnership draws attention from the adults who run the Plantations, as well as from Hiro's childhood friends in Squad 13: the protective leader Ichigo, the level-headed Goro, the boisterous Zorome, the gentle Miku, the ambitious Mitsuru, the kind-hearted Kokoro, the cheerful Futoshi, and the quiet Ikuno.

As the Parasites battle Klaxosaurs, they begin to experience emotions their society has suppressed. They form bonds, fall in love, and question their purpose. Hiro and Zero Two's relationship deepens, revealing fragments of a forgotten past. Meanwhile, the adults known as Callers maintain strict control, and the mysterious Papa oversees everything from the shadows. The first half of the series focuses on the team's growth as pilots and individuals, while the second half peels back the layers of their world, hinting at a larger conspiracy involving the Klaxosaurs, the origins of the FRANXX, and the true nature of the war they are fighting.[edit]
