The case for Marino rests on a specific and somewhat awkward set of facts. He holds the most wins by a starting quarterback who never won a championship, 155 of them, which is both an honor and a gentle joke at his expense. He was the first quarterback to pass for 5,000 yards in a season and the first to throw 48 touchdowns, and he did both in the same year. He led the league in passing yards, touchdown passes and completions for three consecutive seasons, a run nobody has repeated. The honors followed: nine Pro Bowls, three first-team All-Pro selections, the 1984 MVP sweep, the 1998 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, a retired number, a gold jacket in 2005 and a place on the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team in 2020. The absence of a ring has never seriously dented his standing among people who watched him play.
