    Overview

In 1985, Ron Woodroof, a Texas electrician and rodeo enthusiast, received a grim diagnosis: HIV positive, with just a month to live. This true story, adapted for the screen, follows his defiant fight against the disease and the medical establishment.

Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, Dallas Buyers Club stars Matthew McConaughey in a transformative performance as Woodroof. He's joined by Jared Leto as Rayon, a transgender woman with AIDS, and Jennifer Garner as Eve, a doctor who initially clashes with Woodroof's methods. The film, produced on a modest $5 million budget, went on to earn over $55 million at the box office. Its stark portrayal of the AIDS epidemic and one man's unconventional battle earned it significant critical attention, reflected in its strong audience rating.

Ron Woodroof works as an electrician and spends his spare time at rodeos, drinking, using cocaine, and having casual sex. After an accident on the job lands him in the hospital, doctors deliver devastating news: he has tested positive for HIV and likely has only 30 days to live. Initially furious and in denial, Woodroof eventually accepts the diagnosis when his symptoms worsen. Dr. Eve Saks informs him about AZT, the only antiretroviral drug then in clinical trials, but explains that the trial is double-blind and has a long waiting list.

Desperate, Woodroof bribes a hospital orderly to obtain AZT from the trial. The drug nearly kills him, it proves highly toxic, destroying his T-cells. Refusing to give up, he travels to Mexico, where Dr. Vass runs a clinic using unapproved treatments. Dr. Vass explains that AZT is poison and introduces Woodroof to a cocktail of alternative drugs and supplements, including peptide T and ddC, that are available but not FDA-approved in the United States.

Returning to Dallas with a carload of smuggled medications, Woodroof's health dramatically improves. He sees a business opportunity: he partners with Rayon, a transgender woman and fellow AIDS patient he met in the hospital, to create the Dallas Buyers Club. Operating as a membership organization, members pay $400 monthly for access to the non-FDA-approved treatments, technically avoiding drug-selling laws. Woodroof travels to Japan, Mexico, Europe, and beyond, smuggling in experimental drugs while Rayon runs the club and connects with the local gay community.

The central conflict escalates as the FDA, led by agent Richard Barkley, and the hospital, pressured by Dr. Sevard (who receives funding from the AZT manufacturer), work to shut down the club. Meanwhile, Woodroof's relationship with Dr. Saks evolves from adversarial to collaborative as she witnesses his patients thriving on alternative treatments. His partnership with Rayon forces him to confront his deep-seated homophobia and transphobia, slowly transforming his worldview.
