Daily Planet

The Daily Planet is the fictional newspaper at the center of Superman's world, first mentioned in Action Comics #9 in 1939. Its newsroom is home to Clark Kent, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, and editor Perry White, who together chase stories from city hall corruption to cosmic threats. The paper's iconic globe-topped building was inspired by the Old Toronto Star Building, where co-creator Joe Shuster once worked as a newsboy. Shuster later said Metropolis itself was modeled on Toronto, though it's long since felt like a stand-in for New York.

While the Planet is a fictional publication, its cultural weight is real. It represents the ideal of a free press, and its name has been adopted by real businesses: a diner in Lagrangeville, New York, a health center in Richmond, Virginia, and a dive bar in Portland, Oregon, among others. The Discovery Channel even ran a science show called Daily Planet from 1996 to 2018. In the DC universe, the paper was founded by Joshua Meriwether in 1775, starting as a weekly called Our Planet before becoming the daily we know.

The Planet anchors Superman's mythos across comics, radio, TV, and film. Recent projects include James Gunn's Superman (2025) and the upcoming Man of Tomorrow sequel, with filming in Macon, Georgia standing in for Metropolis. LEGO has also confirmed a Daily Planet modular set for 2027, complete with a rumored 36 minifigures. [edit]
