Daemons of the Shadow Realm

Hiromu Arakawa, the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist, returned to dark fantasy with this manga serialized in Monthly Shōnen Gangan since December 10, 2021. Square Enix publishes the series under its Gangan Comics imprint. The story follows twin siblings Yuru and Asa, bound to powerful daemons from the underworld. Yuru lives as a hunter in a remote mountain village, while Asa is confined to a cage underground, performing secret duties. When dragons descend and hunters attack, Yuru awakens the Divine Guardians Right and Left, forging a contract that sets him on a path to reunite with his sister. They discover they are the children who sunder day and night, destined to rule these daemons.

The series blends adventure, supernatural elements, and shonen action. Themes of destiny versus free will, sibling bonds, and the struggle for control over immense power run throughout. As of 2025, thirteen compiled volumes have been released in Japan; the English edition by Square Enix Manga & Books began with volume one on April 25, 2023 (ISBN 978-1-64609-186-7). The first English volume covers chapters 1 through 4, introducing the twins and the initial conflict that drives the narrative.

An anime television adaptation was announced at Anime Expo 2025 on July 5, 2025. Bones Film handles animation, with Masahiro Andō directing, Noboru Takagi writing series scripts, Nobuhiro Arai designing characters, and Kenichiro Suehiro composing music. The anime is scheduled to premiere on April 4, 2026, and will stream internationally on Crunchyroll. [edit]
