About
Cygames Pictures, often abbreviated as CyPic, is a Japanese animation studio founded on April 5, 2016, as a wholly owned subsidiary of the video game developer Cygames, itself part of the CyberAgent group. The studio was established with a clear mission: to produce high-quality anime adaptations of Cygames' popular gaming franchises, including Granblue Fantasy, Princess Connect! Re:Dive, and Uma Musume: Pretty Derby. This vertical integration allowed Cygames to control the quality and expansion of its intellectual properties into the anime medium, a strategy increasingly common among major game companies in Japan.
Under the leadership of founding CEO Koichi Watanabe and later current representative director Takashi Aoi, the studio evolved from a pure adaptation house into a full-fledged animation producer. It now creates original works and manga adaptations alongside its game-based projects. The studio's visual style is distinguished by its heavy integration of 3D CGI with traditional 2D animation, a technique that gives its shows a polished, modern look. Notable productions include Rage of Bahamut: Virgin Soul, Zombie Land Saga (co-produced with MAPPA), and The iDOLM@STER: Shiny Colors.
CyPic operates from its headquarters in Mitaka, Tokyo, and in 2023 opened a second production office in the city to manage its growing workload. The studio benefits from a steady pipeline of work from its parent company's gacha game franchises, providing financial stability that many independent studios lack. Its primary competitors include other game-company-owned studios like CloverWorks and ILCA, as well as larger independent houses such as MAPPA and A-1 Pictures. In early 2024, the studio announced an original feature film, Uma Musume: Pretty Derby – Beginning of a New Era, scheduled for 2025, and expanded its staff by recruiting veteran animators from Trigger and A-1 Pictures, signaling ambitions to produce more high-budget original works.
