Cuphead
"Run, gun, and dodge in a world of hand-drawn chaos."
Overview
When Cuphead and his brother Mugman lose a game of chance to the Devil, they must collect soul contracts from other debtors across the Inkwell Isles to save their own skins. This run-and-gun platformer throws players into a vibrant 1930s cartoon world where every level leads to a massive boss battle. There is no gentle tutorial here; you learn by surviving relentless waves of enemies and complex attack patterns that demand precise timing.
The visual style mimics vintage cel animation with thousands of frames drawn by hand, creating a distinct rubber hose aesthetic reminiscent of Fleischer Studios and early Disney works. The soundtrack by Kristofer Maddigan complements this look with live jazz, swing, and big band recordings that shift intensity as bosses enter new phases. Players can switch between various weapons like the Chaser or Roundabout, but they can only equip a limited number at once, forcing strategic choices before each fight.
A defining feature is the local two-player co-op mode where a second player controls Mugman. This setup allows for tactical coordination, such as one player drawing fire while the other attacks, though the difficulty remains high even with help. The game launched on September 29, 2017, and quickly gained a reputation for its punishing challenge and unique art direction.
Gameplay
Players navigate side-scrolling levels filled with obstacles and enemies before reaching a boss arena. Combat relies on dodging bullets in a bullet-hell style while shooting back with equipped weapons. You can collect Charms for passive buffs or active abilities, but your loadout is restricted, meaning you must plan carefully which tools to bring into each fight.
Boss battles are the core experience, featuring multiple phases with unique attack patterns and musical themes. Each encounter requires memorizing moves and adapting your strategy on the fly. The difficulty is steep, often requiring dozens of attempts to overcome a single opponent.
Story
Cuphead and Mugman gamble away their souls after losing a card game against the Devil himself. To avoid eternal servitude, they travel through the Inkwell Isles to collect the soul contracts of other debtors who have also made deals with the Devil. Along the way, they meet various eccentric characters and face increasingly dangerous foes.
The narrative unfolds through hub worlds where players select their next target. The story concludes when all contracts are collected, leaving the brothers to face the final confrontation with the Devil.
