About
On January 2, 1921, Italian immigrants gathered in Belo Horizonte to establish Palestra Itália, laying the foundation for what would become one of Brazil's most storied clubs. The outbreak of World War II forced a dramatic reinvention when anti-Italian sentiment swept across the nation. In 1942, the club shed its green, white, and red kit to adopt the blue and white of the Southern Cross constellation, officially becoming Cruzeiro Esporte Clube.
The team calls the Mineirão home, an iconic stadium that opened in 1965 and has hosted countless historic moments over six decades. While they compete in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, their dominance is most evident in the state-level Campeonato Mineiro, where they hold a record number of titles.
Cruzeiro stands alone in South American football history as the only club to win every major trophy available: the Brasileirão four times (1966, 2003, 2013, 2014), the Copa do Brasil six times, the Copa Libertadores three times (1976, 1997, 2017), and the Copa Sudamericana in 2018. Their legacy includes legendary figures like Romário, Taffarel, Dida, and Juninho Pernambucano, who helped define eras of success before facing turbulent times recently.
History
The journey began in 1921 as Palestra Itália, founded by the local Italian community. Political pressure during World War II compelled the organization to change its identity in 1942, adopting the name Cruzeiro and the colors of the Brazilian flag. This pivot allowed the club to survive the war years and grow into a regional powerhouse.
Success arrived on the national stage with the first Brasileirão title in 1966 under coach Telê Santana. The 1970s brought continental glory with the 1976 Copa Libertadores victory, cementing their status among South America's elite. The modern era saw a resurgence with back-to-back league titles in 2013 and 2014, followed by another Libertadores crown in 2017.
The 2026 season tested the squad's resilience. Heavy defeats against Red Bull Bragantino and Grêmio left the team struggling near the relegation zone. Despite these challenges, the club maintained activity in the transfer market, securing high-profile players like Gabriel Pec from LA Galaxy to strengthen their attack.
