Crunchyroll is an American subscription video-on-demand service owned by Sony Group Corporation, primarily distributing Japanese anime, East Asian dramas, and related media. Founded in May 2006 by four University of California, Berkeley graduates—Kun Gao, James Lin, Brandon Williams, and Vu Nguyen—the platform started as a fan-subtitled video site before pivoting to licensed streaming in 2008 after raising $4.05 million from Venrock. Today, it offers over 1,000 anime series and more than 200 East Asian dramas in over 18 languages, serving 21 million subscriptions as of 2026.

Crunchyroll's growth has been shaped by key acquisitions. In 2013, The Chernin Group acquired a majority stake for $100 million. AT&T/WarnerMedia gained control via Otter Media in 2018. Sony's Funimation Global Group bought Crunchyroll for $1.175 billion in August 2021 and completed a full integration by 2023 under CEO Rahul Purini, merging Funimation's library and user accounts into a single platform. The company also hosts live events, sells merchandise, produces video games, and operates video channels, positioning itself as a comprehensive anime ecosystem.

Beyond streaming, Crunchyroll has invested in brand identity and market expansion. Its official mascot, Crunchyroll-Hime (Hime), debuted in June 2013. In July 2024, the company refreshed its logo and graphics and launched in Indonesia with localized subtitles and dubbing. Crunchyroll is a member of The Association of Japanese Animations and has partnered with global brands like Manchester United. The platform continues to grow through exclusive licensing, simulcast releases, and expansion into emerging markets, solidifying its role as a leading force in anime distribution worldwide. [edit]
