About
The CrossFit Games is an annual multi-day athletic competition that crowns the Fittest on Earth. Unlike traditional sports with fixed rules and predictable events, the Games throw unknown challenges at athletes, testing their readiness for anything. Events range from classic CrossFit workouts like heavy barbell complexes and high-rep gymnastics to outdoor swimming, road cycling, and strongman obstacles. The competition is the culmination of a season-long qualification process that starts with the CrossFit Open, the world's largest participatory sporting event, drawing hundreds of thousands of athletes from over 170 countries.
The Games have grown from a small gathering of 70 athletes at a ranch in Aromas, California, in 2007 to a major production at venues like the SAP Center in San Jose, drawing over 10,000 fans. The event features divisions for individuals, teams, masters (ages 35+), teenagers (14-17), and adaptive athletes, each competing for the title of Fittest on Earth in their category. The specific events are often kept secret until minutes before they start, a deliberate design to reward well-rounded fitness rather than specialization.
The CrossFit Games have created a distinct sport of fitness, building a global community of athletes and fans. The 2026 edition, the 20th anniversary, will be held July 24-26 at the SAP Center in San Jose, California, with all divisions competing in one location for the first time since 2023.
History
The first CrossFit Games took place in July 2007 at Dave Castro's family ranch in Aromas, California. Founder Greg Glassman and Castro, then director of training, wanted to create a Woodstock of Fitness. The inaugural workout was chosen by pulling colored balls from a hopper: a 1,000-meter row, 100 pull-ups, and seven push jerks. Only 70 athletes showed up, but the event set the template for unknown and varied challenges.
By 2008, attendance jumped to over 300 competitors and 800 fans. In 2009, the Games introduced regional qualifiers, turning into a global competition. The 2010 move to the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, marked a professional leap, with better facilities and bigger crowds. The 2011 Reebok sponsorship brought a $1 million prize purse and mainstream attention. The Games relocated to Madison, Wisconsin, from 2017 to 2023, settling at the Alliant Energy Center, before moving to Fort Worth, Texas, in 2024. The 2026 season, the 20th, will culminate at the SAP Center in San Jose, with an expected 10,000-plus fans.

Cultural Impact
The CrossFit Games turned a gym workout into a spectator sport. It created a new athletic category, the Sport of Fitness, where athletes must be proficient in weightlifting, gymnastics, and endurance. The Open, with its hundreds of thousands of participants, built a global community that shares scores online and competes from garages and affiliate boxes. The Games have influenced fitness culture, popularizing high-intensity functional training and spawning imitators. The annual event also drives the CrossFit brand's identity, showcasing the methodology's effectiveness and fostering loyalty among practitioners worldwide.
Controversies
In June 2020, founder Greg Glassman posted a tweet referencing George Floyd that was widely condemned as racist. He resigned as CEO, and Reebok terminated its sponsorship deal. The organization faced a reckoning over its culture and leadership. The 2020 Games still took place but without fans and under a cloud of uncertainty. The event has also faced criticism over the safety of its workouts, with occasional serious injuries, and debates about drug testing and the use of performance-enhancing substances.
