Credit Suisse
Switzerland"Swiss banking heritage now part of UBS"
About
Alfred Escher established the institution on January 1, 1856, to finance the construction of Switzerland's national railway network. This initial purpose drove its expansion into a major industrial financier that helped build the country's electrical grid and supported heavy manufacturing sectors throughout the late nineteenth century. The bank cultivated a reputation for strict secrecy while managing assets for Europe's aristocracy and later the global elite.
Modern operations faced severe challenges as the firm struggled with repeated scandals involving tax evasion and money laundering schemes that resulted in billions of dollars in fines. Tidjane Thiam led the organization until early 2023 when liquidity concerns triggered massive client withdrawals. Thomas Gottstein took over briefly before the Swiss government brokered an emergency sale to UBS Group AG in March 2023.
The acquisition concluded in May 2024, marking the end of Credit Suisse as an independent entity. While the operating bank dissolved, legacy investment vehicles like the Credit Suisse High Yield Credit Fund continue trading under their original names within the UBS structure. Former executives from the firm have since moved to reshape other institutions, including Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp in Japan.
