Founded on August 13, 1883, as Singers F.C., the club adopted the name Coventry City in 1898 and has worn sky-blue kits without interruption since 1962. For over a century the team played at Highfield Road before relocating to the Coventry Building Society Arena in 2005, where they now operate with full control following the resolution of long-standing rental disputes.

The club reached its highest point in 1987 by defeating Tottenham Hotspur 3–2 in the FA Cup final to claim its only major trophy. Between 1967 and 2001, Coventry spent 34 seasons in the top flight and became an inaugural member of the Premier League in 1992.
