Coritiba F.C.

Coritiba Foot Ball Club, commonly called Coritiba and nicknamed Coxa, is a historic Brazilian football club based in Curitiba, Paraná. Founded on October 12, 1909 by German immigrants, it is the oldest active football club in the state. The club plays its home matches at Estádio Couto Pereira, a stadium opened in 1932 with a capacity of around 40,000.

Coritiba's biggest achievement came in 1985 when it won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, becoming the first and only club from Paraná to claim Brazil's top national title. The club has also won the Série B three times (2007, 2010, 2025) and holds a record 39 Campeonato Paranaense titles, more than rivals Athletico Paranaense (27) and Paraná Clube (7) combined.

The Atletiba derby against Athletico Paranaense is one of Brazil's fiercest rivalries, dating back to 1924. In June 2023, Treecorp Investimentos acquired 90% of Coritiba's SAF for 1.1 billion reais, ushering in a new corporate era.[edit]

The club was founded on October 12, 1909 by a group of German immigrants in Curitiba. The name Coritiba comes from the indigenous Tupi language, meaning "land of many pines." Early success came quickly: Coritiba won its first Campeonato Paranaense in 1916 and dominated the state scene through the 1920s and 1930s.

The 1985 Brasileirão title was the club's crowning moment. Under coach Ênio Andrade, Coritiba finished top of the final group, ahead of clubs like Bangu and Brasil de Pelotas. The team featured stars like midfielder Tostão (not the 1970 World Cup star) and goalkeeper Rafael. That title remains a source of immense pride for Paraná football.

After decades in the top flight, Coritiba was relegated in 2005 but bounced back by winning the Série B in 2007. The club yo-yoed between divisions in the 2010s, winning Série B again in 2010. The 2025 Série B title, under coach Jorginho, secured promotion back to Série A for 2026. The club's all-time leading scorer is Duílio, with 211 goals between 1948 and 1961.[edit]
