Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre

Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre, known to fans as CMLL, is a Mexican professional wrestling promotion based in Mexico City. It is the oldest continuously operating professional wrestling promotion in the world, having been founded in 1933 as Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre (EMLL) by Salvador Lutteroth González. CMLL is the foundational institution of Mexican lucha libre, the high-flying, mask-heavy style of wrestling that has become a national cultural treasure. The promotion nurtures local talent and preserves traditions like the sacred masks worn by luchadores, which can be wagered in career-defining matches.

CMLL runs regular shows at its home venue, Arena México, in the Colonia Doctores neighborhood, as well as at Arena Coliseo and Arena Puebla across Mexico. Salvador Lutteroth González founded Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre in 1933, aiming to build a professional wrestling promotion rooted in Mexican culture. The early years were tough, but by the 1940s EMLL started turning a profit and broke ground on what would become Arena México. A famous early incident helped cement the promotion's reputation: a staged match where wrestler Velázquez supposedly kicked opponent Gomez so hard that he dislodged Gomez's glass eye. The dramatic effect convinced audiences the violence was real and made the villain El Murciélago Enmascarado Lutteroth's most hated character.

During the 1950s and 1960s, EMLL achieved major success, building additional arenas and creating stars like El Santo and Blue Demon, who became national heroes. The 1970s were rockier, but the promotion continued operating. In 1988, EMLL ended its arrangement with the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), and between 1991 and 1992 it rebranded as Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre.
