Overview
Conker's Bad Fur Day is a cult-classic platform video game developed by Rare and released for the Nintendo 64 in 2001. Following Conker, a greedy, hard-drinking red squirrel, the game sends its hero on a chaotic journey to return home to his girlfriend after a wild night out. The path takes him through a series of bizarre and comical misadventures, from a battle with a singing pile of feces to a parody of Saving Private Ryan. Mechanically it follows the conventions of the era's platform games, with jumping, puzzle-solving, and combat across linear levels. A unique context-sensitive action button changes Conker's response based on the situation, whether he's carrying a slingshot or operating a piece of machinery. The game also includes a multiplayer mode with several competitive game types like Beach (capture-the-flag), Heist (bank robbery), and Raptor (dinosaur survival).
What set the game dramatically apart was its tone. Although it shared the cheerful, cartoonish visual style of Rare's earlier family-friendly platformers, it was deliberately designed for mature audiences. The game is packed with crude and dark humor, graphic violence, profanity, alcohol and tobacco references, parodies of popular films like The Matrix and The Godfather, and frequent fourth-wall-breaking jokes. This subversive, irreverent approach made it stand out sharply from the wholesome image of its host console and earned it a devoted following. The game was directed by Chris Seavor, with a musical score composed by Robin Beanland, and it pushed the N64 hardware to its limits, using the Expansion Pak to achieve 640x480 resolution and full voice acting for all characters.
Though it sold modestly upon release, Conker's Bad Fur Day became a beloved cult favorite, praised for its humor, ambition, and technical polish. It holds a Metacritic score of 92 and won a BAFTA for Best Writing. The game's community remains active, with fan sites, modding projects, and speedrunning communities. In 2021, Rare released a limited-edition soundtrack on vinyl for the 20th anniversary. The game was later remade as Conker: Live & Reloaded for Xbox in 2005, and the original N64 version was included in the Rare Replay compilation for Xbox One in 2015.
Gameplay
Players control Conker through linear, themed levels, jumping across platforms, solving puzzles, and defeating enemies. The game introduces a context-sensitive action button that changes Conker's response depending on the situation. For example, near a ledge he might grab it, near an enemy he might attack with a frying pan, or near a machine he might operate it. This mechanic is central to many puzzles and combat encounters. Conker has a health bar that can be replenished by collecting chocolate bars, which he eats with audible pleasure. Death results in a Game Over screen where Conker is charged a monetary penalty, and the game taunts the player with messages like "You are a bad person."
The game features a variety of weapons and items, including a slingshot, a crossbow, a baseball bat, and a frying pan. Some levels include vehicle sections, such as a minecart chase and a hang glider sequence. Multiplayer supports up to four players via split-screen, with modes including Beach (capture the flag), Heist (team-based bank robbery), Raptor (survival against dinosaurs), War (third-person shooter), and Deathmatch (free-for-all).
Story
Conker the Red Squirrel wakes up with a massive hangover after a night of heavy drinking. He has no memory of the previous night and must find his way home to his girlfriend, Berri. His journey quickly spirals out of control. He encounters a suicidal scarecrow who teaches him how to save and load the game. He is then enlisted by the Panther King to retrieve a piece of the king's treasure, which leads Conker through a series of absurd and dangerous tasks.
Along the way, Conker meets a cast of eccentric characters: the Great Mighty Poo, a singing pile of feces that attacks with projectiles; the Teddiz, a parody of Care Bears who are actually predatory; and the Prince, the bumbling son of the Panther King. The story parodies several films, including The Matrix (a scene where Conker dodges bullets in slow motion), Saving Private Ryan (a D-Day style beach assault), and The Godfather (a mafia-style showdown). The game frequently breaks the fourth wall, with Conker commenting on game mechanics and the player's actions. The ending sees Conker becoming the new king, only to find himself miserable and alone, highlighting the dark, cynical tone of the narrative.
