About
Conception is a Norwegian progressive power metal band from Raufoss, originally active from 1989 to 1997, during which they released four studio albums. The band reunited in 2018, twenty years after originally disbanding, has since released one studio album and an EP.
Known for their intricate compositions and high-speed riffs, the group established themselves as a cult favorite within the European metal underground. Their sound blends the melodic sensibilities of power metal with the structural complexity of progressive rock. Today, the lineup features founding members Kjetil Nordhus, Terje Harøy, and Jan Kenneth Barkved alongside current bassist Stian Kristoffersen.
The band's resurgence has been met with enthusiasm from long-time fans and new listeners alike. They continue to perform live across Europe and North America, maintaining the energy that defined their early career while incorporating updated production values.
Formation Story
Kjetil Nordhus founded Conception in 1989 in the small town of Raufoss, Norway, driven by a desire to create music that pushed beyond standard metal conventions. The early lineup solidified with drummer Terje Harøy and guitarist Jan Kenneth Barkved, who became the core creative engine for the group. Their shared vision focused on merging speed and melody with complex time signatures and thematic depth.
After years of rehearsing and refining their sound, the band signed with Noise Records and released The Fourth Dimension in 1993. This debut album immediately caught the attention of the progressive metal community, showcasing a level of technical proficiency rare for a Norwegian act at the time. Morten Veland joined briefly as a guitarist during this period before leaving to form Sirenia, a move that would later influence the broader metal landscape.
The band continued to release records through the mid-90s, including In the Future to Come (1995) and Time Is the Enemy (1996). Despite their growing reputation, internal creative differences and the shifting tides of the metal scene led to their disbandment in 1997 after the release of The Great Unknown. For two decades, the members pursued other projects, but the pull of their unfinished musical journey remained strong.
Fan demand eventually sparked a reunion in 2018. Nordhus, Harøy, and Barkved reconvened to celebrate their legacy and create new music. They secured a deal with Napalm Records and began touring again, culminating in a sold-out set at Wacken Open Air in 2019. The reunion proved that their music had aged well, resonating with both old fans and a new generation of metal enthusiasts.

Musical Style
Conception's sound is defined by a seamless blend of progressive metal and power metal elements. Their compositions often feature dual guitar harmonies, rapid-fire drumming, and operatic vocals delivered by Nordhus. The band avoids simple verse-chorus structures in favor of extended suites that explore complex themes and shifting tempos.
Early albums like The Fourth Dimension showcased a raw, energetic approach typical of the 90s metal scene, while their 2024 release A New Dimension demonstrates a matured sound that balances technicality with contemporary production. Lyrically, they often explore science fiction concepts, philosophy, and human struggle, adding a layer of intellectual depth to their heavy instrumentation.
Production-wise, the band has evolved from the analog warmth of their Noise Records era to the polished, high-fidelity sound of the Napalm Records era. Despite these changes, the core identity remains intact: fast, melodic, and technically demanding music designed to challenge and entertain.
