Colorado Buffaloes

The Colorado Buffaloes represent the University of Colorado Boulder in NCAA Division I athletics, fielding seventeen varsity teams across a wide range of sports. The program competes primarily in the Pac-12 Conference for football and other major sports, though historical affiliations include the Big 12 and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Their identity traces back to a 1934 campus newspaper contest where Andrew Dickson won a five-dollar prize for suggesting the name Buffaloes, which unified men's and women's programs after the temporary use of Lady Buffs in the 1970s.

Football serves as the centerpiece of the athletic department, with the team playing its home games at Folsom Field on the university campus in Boulder. The stadium is known for its high altitude, often providing a distinct advantage to the home squad during contests. The football program achieved significant success in the 1990s under head coach Bill McCartney, securing consensus national championships in 1990 and 1995. The 1990 team finished undefeated and defeated Nebraska in the Orange Bowl, while the 1995 squad claimed another title under McCartney's direction. A third championship followed in 2001 when Gary Barnett led the team to victory in the Fiesta Bowl. These titles established a legacy of excellence that the current administration aims to restore.

Conference realignment has reshaped the competitive landscape for the Buffaloes over recent decades. After long tenures in the Big 12 Conference, the team joined the Pac-12 in 2011. The program maintains historic rivalries, including the Border War against the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers and a longstanding contest with the Wyoming Cowboys.
