Founded on March 1, 1937, Colchester United represents the town of Colchester in Essex. The club spent years dominating the Southern League before securing election to the Football League in 1950, becoming one of the oldest non-league teams to achieve this status. They currently compete in EFL League Two, the fourth tier of English football, playing their home matches at the Colchester Community Stadium.

The team replaced their historic Layer Road ground in 2008 after a 71-year tenure there. Their most celebrated achievement remains the 1971 FA Cup fifth-round victory over Don Revie's Leeds United, winning 3–2 in front of a crowd of 26,433. This result stands as one of the greatest cup shocks in English football history.
