    Overview

James Ward Byrkit's Coherence transforms a simple dinner party into a suffocating maze of paranoia and quantum confusion. Four couples gather in a suburban home on the night a mysterious comet streaks across the sky, but their evening quickly unravels when reality begins to fracture around them.

The film relies entirely on its tight script and improvisational performances rather than special effects, creating a tense atmosphere where every shadow holds a threat. Shot in just six days for $50,000, this independent thriller proves that compelling storytelling can overcome limited budgets.

    PlotSpoiler-free

On the evening of August 13, 2013, eight friends assemble at the Los Angeles home of Hugh and Lee for a casual dinner. The group includes newly engaged couple Mike and Em, along with Kevin, Beth, Amir, Laurie, and two others. Conversation flows easily until a bright comet, designated C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring), passes unusually close to Earth. As the celestial body crosses the sky, the power grid fails, plunging the house into darkness.

The guests light candles and flashlights, but strange anomalies soon emerge. Neighbors' houses appear different from what they saw earlier, and cars have vanished or changed models. Cell phones lose signal as the group realizes the comet is not merely an astronomical event but a catalyst for fracturing reality. They begin encountering versions of themselves that are slightly altered, some more confident, others more aggressive, and some living in timelines where events unfolded differently.

Tensions rise as the friends discover doppelgängers who claim to be from other realities. Em interacts with a version of herself who never got engaged to Mike, while Mike meets a bitter single counterpart. The group splits into factions, with some trying to maintain order while others succumb to fear. One faction finds a murdered body in a neighboring house, raising the stakes from confusion to mortal danger.

The characters must decide whom to trust as lines blur between their original timeline and fractured realities. Every person they encounter could be an imposter from a divergent timeline. The narrative builds through psychological horror and existential dread, forcing the friends to confront the fluidity of their identities and the unreliability of their memories. They face impossible choices about survival without knowing how the crisis will resolve.

The film uses minimal special effects to create claustrophobia, turning a standard gathering into a nightmare of quantum uncertainty. Improvised dialogue and natural reactions heighten the sense of disorientation. The story leaves the audience questioning the nature of reality itself before the final moments reveal the true cost of maintaining a single timeline.
