    About

In 2006, Sunrise launched an anime that would upend the mecha genre. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion drops viewers into an alternate world where the Holy Britannian Empire rules three-quarters of the globe. The protagonist Lelouch Lamperouge, a brilliant but exiled prince, receives a mysterious power from a green-haired woman named C.C.: the Geass, which lets him command anyone once. He uses it to destroy Britannia from within, donning the mask of Zero to lead a resistance movement called the Black Knights.

The series was a collision of talent. Director Gorō Taniguchi, writer Ichirō Ōkouchi, and the all-female manga collective Clamp (character designers) crafted a story that balanced giant robot battles with Shakespearean tragedy. The original 25-episode season aired on MBS from October 2006 to July 2007, followed immediately by R2 in 2008. Together they sold over a million DVD and Blu-ray discs in Japan. The English dub aired on Adult Swim, introducing the franchise to a massive Western audience.

After the series ended, the franchise kept expanding. A trilogy of compilation films (2017–2018) re-edited the story with new scenes, leading to a direct sequel film Lelouch of the Re;surrection in 2019, which grossed over ¥1 billion. In December 2024, Taniguchi confirmed multiple sequels are in production as part of a 10-year plan. The latest installment, Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture, released in 2024. The franchise now spans manga, light novels, video games like Lost Colors, and extensive merchandise including Knightmare Frame model kits.
