"A live audio chat platform where anyone can step up to the mic"

March 2020 Android, iOS Alpha Exploration Co.
    Community

    Overview

Clubhouse arrived in March 2020 as a social audio experiment from Alpha Exploration Co, letting people chat inside virtual rooms without any video or text. Paul Davison and Rohan Seth built the platform for iOS first, then added Android support in May 2021. Users could drop into live conversations on anything from tech news to comedy, switching between listening and speaking roles with a single tap.

The app gained massive traction during early 2021 when it operated behind an invite-only wall that created a sense of exclusivity. High-profile guests like Elon Musk, Oprah Winfrey, and Mark Zuckerberg joined rooms, drawing millions of listeners who wanted to hear unscripted discussions. This surge pushed the company valuation toward $4 billion before the waitlist ended in July 2021.

While the experience lacks traditional mechanics like levels or scores, its design mimics a casual gathering where anyone can step up to the mic. The atmosphere felt different from other apps because it focused entirely on voice, creating a space similar to tuning into a live radio show you could interrupt.

    Gameplay

Participants enter virtual rooms categorized by topic such as politics, technology, or comedy. Inside these spaces, users hold one of two roles: Speakers with open microphones or Listeners who can only hear. Any listener can request to join the stage, and if moderators grant permission, they move to speak while others listen. The system relies on low latency servers to handle thousands of concurrent streams without lag.
