Club Tijuana

Founded on January 1, 2007, by businessman Jorge Hank Rhon, Club Tijuana burst onto the scene with a mission to represent the border city of Tijuana in Mexico's top flight. The franchise adopted the Xoloitzcuintle as its mascot, an ancient hairless dog breed native to the region, and shortened its name to the catchy Xolos. This rapid ascent from a new entity to a Liga MX staple defies the typical timeline for Mexican football clubs, which often rely on decades of history.

The team secured promotion to the first division in May 2011 after defeating Irapuato 2–1 in the Ascenso MX final. Just eighteen months later, they achieved something rare by winning the Copa MX title in the Clausura 2012 tournament. Their consistency has been remarkable; despite being one of the youngest franchises in the league, they remain one of only seven clubs to never face relegation since joining the top tier.

Home matches take place at Estadio Caliente, a venue holding roughly 29,333 spectators known for its electric atmosphere. The stadium serves as a fortress for the fanbase, collectively called La Afición, who are famous for their loud chants and use of flares. Success followed quickly. In the Clausura 2012 season, barely a year and a half into their top-tier existence, the Xolos captured the Copa MX trophy. This feat highlighted their ability to compete with established giants like Club América and Pumas UNAM. Over the years, the roster has featured a mix of Argentine and Uruguayan tacticians alongside high-profile Mexican managers such as Miguel Herrera and Juan Carlos Osorio.

Recent years have seen the team expand its footprint beyond domestic borders. By August 2026, Club Tijuana was actively participating in the Leagues Cup, facing North American rivals including San Diego FC and Portland Timbers. While they suffered a 3–1 defeat to Portland in mid-August 2026, the competition showcased their growing profile.
