Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers are a professional basketball team based in Cleveland, Ohio, competing in the National Basketball Association as a member of the Eastern Conference. Founded in 1970 as an expansion franchise, the team joined the NBA for the 1970–71 season, originally playing at the Cleveland Arena. The franchise moved to the Coliseum at Richfield in 1974 and later to their current home, Rocket Arena (originally Gund Arena, then Quicken Loans Arena), which opened in 1994. The Cavaliers are part of the NBA’s Eastern Conference and have historically competed in the Central Division.

The franchise’s early years were marked by struggle, but the team found its first sustained success in the late 1980s and early 1990s, led by players like Mark Price, Brad Daugherty, and Larry Nance. That era produced multiple playoff appearances but no NBA Finals trips. Another long-standing rivalry is with the Chicago Bulls, dating back to the Michael Jordan era in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the Bulls repeatedly eliminated the Cavaliers in the playoffs. There is also a geographic rivalry with the Detroit Pistons, which intensified during the mid-2000s when the two teams met in multiple playoff series.

Fan culture and traditions are deeply tied to Cleveland’s identity. The team’s fan base is known for its passionate support, especially during the LeBron James era, when sellout crowds at Rocket Arena were common.
