As of 2016, Clean Bandit had sold over 13 million singles and 1.6 million albums worldwide. The group continues to release music, with their latest number-one single, "Solo" featuring Demi Lovato, released in 2018.

    Formation Story

Clean Bandit formed in Cambridge, England, in 2008, when University of Cambridge students Jack Patterson and Grace Chatto decided to establish a band. Both shared a profound passion for classical music and electronic dance music, a fusion that would become central to their identity. They soon expanded the lineup, recruiting Jack’s brother, Luke Patterson, on drums, and fellow student Neil Amin-Smith as a violinist. The group’s formation was organic, driven by existing friendships and shared musical interests rather than formal auditions. This initial instrumental core, comprising Grace Chatto and the Patterson brothers, quickly defined their distinctive sound. Jack Patterson took on the roles of principal songwriter and music video director, while Grace co-produced the music, produced the music videos, and managed the project. The band's unique name, "Clean Bandit," was adopted after Jack and Grace encountered a Russian phrase during their travels meaning "complete idiot" or "broke person," which they found fitting for their student finances.

Operating from their student accommodation, the nascent group began recording a blend of covers and original tracks. They innovatively combined the rich, intricate sounds of cello and violin with contemporary dance beats, a pioneering approach that set them apart. From these early stages, the band also developed a practice of featuring guest vocalists on their songs, complementing their instrumental foundation. This distinctive sound and creative output quickly garnered attention, leading to Clean Bandit securing a record deal with Black Butter Records in 2012. Their official debut single, "A+E," was subsequently released on November 30, 2012, marking their entry into the music scene.

Building on the momentum of their debut, Clean Bandit continued to refine their unique blend of classical and electronic music. Their second single, "Mozart's House," released in 2013, further showcased their burgeoning talent and appeal, climbing to number 17 on the UK singles chart. This early success solidified their presence and laid crucial groundwork for what would soon become their mainstream breakthrough, establishing them as an innovative force in electronic music.

    Musical Style

Clean Bandit's music is built on a foundation of classical instrumentation, particularly cello and violin, layered over electronic dance production. Their early work from 2012 to 2013 leaned heavily into classical house, with tracks like "Mozart's House" sampling classical motifs. The breakthrough single "Rather Be" (2014) refined this sound into a polished pop-dance hybrid, combining a string quartet hook with a four-on-the-floor beat. Over time, the group incorporated tropical house elements in "Rockabye" (2016) and symphonic pop in "Symphony" (2017). Their second album, What Is Love? (2018), embraced mainstream pop collaborations with artists like Demi Lovato and Marina. In the 2020s, they experimented with Latin pop and dance-pop, as heard on "Tick Tock" (2020) and "Drive" (2021). Lyrically, the songs often explore love, resilience, and empowerment, delivered by a rotating cast of guest vocalists.
