Clash of Clans
"Build, fight, and rule your clan."
Overview
Clash of Clans, a free-to-play massively multiplayer online strategy game from Finnish developer Supercell, launched on iOS on August 2, 2012, and on Android on October 7, 2013. The player takes the role of a village chief, constructing and upgrading buildings with gold, elixir, and dark elixir. These resources can be earned by raiding other players, producing them in your own base, or purchasing them with gems (the premium currency). The village includes defensive structures like cannons and archer towers, resource buildings, and military buildings such as barracks and spell factories. Players train troops, Barbarians, Archers, Giants, Goblins, Dragons, alongside spells and siege machines, then deploy them in tactical top-down battles against other players' bases.
The game has no traditional narrative; its minimal story frames a persistent conflict between rival villages and clans. The goal is to build the most powerful village, climb leaderboards, and dominate in clan-based competitions. Multiplayer is central: players attack each other's bases asynchronously, earning trophies and resources. Clans of up to 50 members can chat, donate troops, and participate in Clan Wars (scheduled 5v5 or larger battles), Clan War Leagues (monthly competitive seasons), and Clan Capital raids (weekend events). Friendly challenges let clan members test attack strategies against each other's bases.
Clash of Clans was developed by a small Supercell team led by game designer Lasse Louhento and programmer Janne Snellman, with art direction by Jonne Muurinen. The company, headquartered in Helsinki, built the game on a custom in-house engine optimized for touch controls and cross-platform compatibility. The colorful, cartoonish 3D art style scales across screen sizes, with dynamic lighting and particle effects for spells and attacks. Major post-launch updates include the Builder Base (May 2017), a second village with separate mechanics; Clan Wars (April 2014); Clan War Leagues (October 2018); and the Clan Capital (May 2022), a shared village built cooperatively by up to 50 clan members. New troop levels, hero units (Barbarian King, Archer Queen, Grand Warden, Royal Champion), spells, siege machines, and town hall levels (up to Town Hall 16 as of 2024) have been added over time.
Gameplay
Players manage a village by constructing and upgrading buildings. Resources, gold, elixir, and dark elixir, are earned through raiding other players, producing in resource buildings, or buying with gems. Defensive structures like cannons, archer towers, walls, and traps protect the base. Military buildings include barracks (to train troops), spell factories, and the clan castle. Players deploy troops manually in top-down battles; units act autonomously once placed. Attacks earn trophies and resources, while defenses lose them. The game also features a single-player campaign against goblin villages. The Builder Base (added in 2017) offers a separate village with its own mechanics, including a versus battle mode where two players attack each other simultaneously.
Story
Clash of Clans has no conventional story. The game presents a world where rival villages and clans compete for resources and dominance. The player's chief builds a village, trains an army, and engages in perpetual raiding and clan warfare. The only narrative elements are the goblin campaign (a series of pre-built bases to attack) and occasional seasonal events that add thematic flavor, such as Halloween or Christmas-themed decorations and obstacles. The lore is minimal, conveyed through troop descriptions and building names.
