City of Ember

In the vast, underground metropolis of Ember, life is dictated by the hum of a colossal, aging generator that powers the city. Built centuries ago by scientists to safeguard humanity from an unspecified surface catastrophe, Ember is now well past its intended 200-year lifespan. Frequent blackouts and dwindling resources cast a growing shadow of fear over the inhabitants, who sense their world is slowly dying.

Two teenagers, Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow, are on the cusp of their Assignment Day, when they will receive their adult jobs. Lina, a spirited messenger, dreams of exploring the city's hidden corners, while Doon, a thoughtful boy, yearns to fix the failing generator and understand the secrets of Ember. Their paths converge when Lina receives a fragmented, cryptic document from the outgoing mayor, a clue that might hold the key to survival, and Doon discovers hints of a way out through a hidden underground river. The City of Ember exists as a self-contained world, its inhabitants believing it to be the entirety of existence. Built as a sanctuary against a surface disaster that occurred centuries prior, Ember relies on a massive, aging generator for light and power. This generator, however, is beginning to fail, leading to increasingly frequent and prolonged blackouts that fill the populace with dread. The city's resources are also dwindling, and a sense of desperation hangs in the air.

Lina Mayfleet, a young woman with a knack for running and a curious spirit, is assigned the job of Pipeworks Runner, delivering messages across the sprawling city. Doon Harrow, a boy fascinated by mechanics and the city's failing infrastructure, dreams of becoming an engineer to fix the generator. He is assigned the job of Messenger, a role he finds disappointing but which places him in proximity to the city's workings.

On Assignment Day, the outgoing mayor, Nicholas Cole, appears distressed and gives Lina a small, tattered document containing strange symbols and fragmented instructions. Meanwhile, Doon, while working in the Pipeworks, discovers a hidden section that leads to an underground river and a collection of boats. He realizes these might be the means of escape that the city's founders intended.

Lina, examining the document, believes it might be a map or a guide. She enlists Doon's help, and together they begin to decipher the cryptic message. Their investigation leads them to believe that the document holds the secret to a way out of Ember, a path to the Outside. They explore forgotten tunnels and hidden chambers, piecing together clues left by the city's original builders.

Their quest is complicated by Mayor Cole, who is revealed to be hoarding scarce resources like food and supplies for himself and his inner circle. He is resistant to any talk of escape or the city's impending doom, preferring to maintain his control and deceive the citizens. Lina and Doon find themselves pursued by the mayor's enforcers, who are tasked with suppressing any knowledge of the Outside or potential escape routes. They must work quickly to unravel the final parts of the document and find the hidden exit before the generator fails completely or they are captured.[edit]
