Brothers Carlos and Francisco Gonzalez Salas established Cinépolis in Morelia, Michoacán, during 1971. The enterprise started as a single venue and expanded into the largest cinema operator across Latin America. Today the chain manages roughly 427 locations within 97 Mexican cities while maintaining operations in over 18 countries including the United States, Brazil, and Spain.

The brand operates under the slogan More Than a Movie to distinguish its service model from standard theaters. This approach includes full-service dining at premium Luxe locations where guests can order gourmet meals and wine directly to their seats. The company also runs a streaming platform called Cinépolis Digital and has integrated real estate development projects that place theaters inside shopping malls.

Recent corporate activities involve partnerships with technology firms like Unique X for system upgrades and Openbank for a new digital credit card launched in July 2026. Leadership remains under the control of the founding family despite various restructuring efforts over the decades. [edit]
