In 1977, a Texan named Lee Roy Mitchell opened the first Cinemark theater in Plano, Texas. That single screen grew into a global chain. By the 1990s, Cinemark pioneered stadium seating, changing how audiences watch movies. The company went public in 2007 and now operates 497 theaters across the U.S. and Latin America. Cinemark is the third-largest chain in the United States and the largest in Brazil, where it commands a 30 percent market share. Its portfolio includes brands like Century Theatres, Tinseltown USA, and Rave Cinemas.

Beyond standard screens, Cinemark pushes premium experiences. The Cinemark XD format, with wall-to-wall screens and laser projection, competes with IMAX. Luxury Lounger recliners, D-BOX motion seats, and in-theater dining options like Reserve Kitchen & Bar aim to make a trip to the movies feel like a night out. The Movie Club loyalty program offers discounts and free tickets, building repeat business.

In 2023, Cinemark generated $1.2 billion in box office revenue, signaling a strong post-pandemic recovery. The company continues to invest in technology and entertainment centers.
