Hyde-Smith's record is built on firsts rather than trophies. In 2011 she became the first woman elected Mississippi Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce, taking an office that had always belonged to men. Seven years later she became the first woman to represent Mississippi in either chamber of Congress, a barrier that had stood since statehood. She has since risen to chair the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee, giving Mississippi a seat at the table on the spending bills that fund roads, housing and disaster recovery. For a state that has absorbed repeated hurricanes and tornadoes, that gavel matters more than any award.
