About
The Cincinnati Bengals are a professional American football team established in 1968. They compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the AFC North division. The team plays its home games in downtown Cincinnati at Paycor Stadium, a venue that was formerly known as Paul Brown Stadium.
Founded by Paul Brown, the former head coach of the Cleveland Browns, the Bengals were granted franchise approval by the American Football League (AFL) on May 23, 1967. They began play in the 1968 season, participating in the AFL before its merger with the NFL in 1970. The Bengals' home fields have included Nippert Stadium, Riverfront Stadium, and currently Paycor Stadium.
Throughout their history, the Bengals have achieved eleven division championships and three conference championships. They have appeared in three Super Bowls: XVI, XXIII, and LVI, though they have yet to secure a Super Bowl title. After a period of struggle in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the team experienced a resurgence, becoming consistent playoff contenders in recent years.
History
The Cincinnati Bengals were founded by Paul Brown on May 23, 1967, receiving AFL franchise approval. The team began play in the 1968 season, initially using Nippert Stadium for their home games before moving to Riverfront Stadium in 1970. Their first division championship came in 1970, and they reached their first Super Bowl, XVI, following the 1981 season, losing to the San Francisco 49ers. Another Super Bowl appearance, XXIII, occurred after the 1988 season, again resulting in a loss to the 49ers.
The team faced a prolonged period without a playoff win, which lasted from 1990 until the 2021 season. During the 2000s, the Bengals began to rebuild, securing multiple division titles. Under head coach Zac Taylor and quarterback Joe Burrow, the team reached Super Bowl LVI following the 2021 season, marking a significant return to prominence. The team's current rivals include the Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, and Pittsburgh Steelers.
