Chthonic remains active today, though their touring schedule has slowed as frontman Freddy Lim juggles politics with music. In 2025, Lim was appointed Taiwan's Representative to Finland, a role that saw the band headline a diplomatic metal festival in Helsinki alongside Finnish acts Lost Society and Korpiklaani. Chthonic formed in 1995 in Taipei, emerging from the city's underground metal scene. The early lineup was fluid, with guitarists and drummers rotating through the ranks. Freddy Lim, then a young political science student, and bassist Doris Yeh, who met through the local scene, became the core. Their first demo, Satan's Horns, came out in 1998, and the debut album The First Zombie followed in 1999. That record was raw, aggressive black metal with lyrics in Mandarin and Taiwanese, but it already hinted at their cultural ambition.

Their sophomore effort, 9th Empyrean (2000), marked a turning point. Lim picked up the erhu, a two-stringed bowed instrument, and taught himself to play it, integrating its mournful tones into the band's sound. That fusion became their signature. By 2002's Relentless Recurrence, the lineup had stabilized with guitarists Jesse Liu and CJ Kao and drummer Dani Wang, and the band was writing concept albums about Taiwan's history.

The breakthrough came with Seediq Bale (2005), a concept record about the Wushe Incident, a 1930 uprising of Taiwan's indigenous Seediq people against Japanese colonial rule. The album was released in both Taiwanese and English versions, and its critical acclaim put Chthonic on the international map. Freddy Lim's activism, from chairing Amnesty International Taiwan to serving as a legislator and now Taiwan's Representative to Finland, has made Chthonic a rare case of a metal band whose frontman transitioned into formal governance.
