Waltz is one of only a handful of actors to win two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor, both for performances in Quentin Tarantino films. His turn as Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds is frequently cited as one of the greatest villain performances in cinema history. He also won the Cannes Best Actor award for that role, a rare feat for a supporting performance. His second Oscar for Django Unchained made him the first actor to win for a Tarantino film twice. Waltz has been recognized with Germany's Order of Merit and an honorary doctorate from the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich.
