Ejiofor's trophy shelf is packed with critics' prizes. He swept nearly every major film critics' award for his performance in 12 Years a Slave, including the New York Film Critics Circle, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and National Society of Film Critics. That sweep is rare for a British actor in a lead role. He also won the BAFTA for Best Actor, beating nominees like Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks. On stage, his Olivier Award for Othello placed him among the finest Shakespearean actors of his generation. He is one of the few actors to have won both a major film award and a major theatre award in the same decade. His CBE in 2015 recognized not just his acting but his broader contribution to British arts.
