    About

Steve Ells, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, opened the first Chipotle near the University of Denver campus on July 13, 1993. He was inspired by the taquerias and burrito shops of San Francisco's Mission District, where he saw that fresh, high-quality ingredients could be served quickly. The name comes from the Nahuatl word for a smoked, dried jalapeño pepper. By 1998, Chipotle had grown to 16 locations in Colorado, and McDonald's became a major investor. McDonald's fully divested in 2006, by which time the chain had expanded to over 500 restaurants. As of December 2025, Chipotle operates 4,000 locations across 48 states, Washington D.C., Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and South Korea, with plans to enter the Middle East and Asia-Pacific by 2027.

Chipotle's menu is intentionally limited: burritos, tacos, bowls, burrito bowls, quesadillas, and salads. Customers choose from proteins including chicken, steak, barbacoa, carnitas, and sofritas, then add beans, rice, salsas, and toppings. The chain's "Food with Integrity" commitment emphasizes responsibly sourced ingredients, such as non-GMO, organic, and pasture-raised options where possible. In 2024, Chipotle introduced a loyalty program tier system and launched Chipotle Honey Chicken as a limited-time offering that later became permanent. Digital orders through the app and website account for over 40% of total sales, driven by a popular rewards program and viral TikTok campaigns.

The company has faced significant challenges. Between 2015 and 2018, E. coli and norovirus outbreaks sickened hundreds of customers, leading to a federal investigation and a temporary sales slump. Chipotle also dealt with labor disputes, including allegations of wage theft and union-busting at Michigan locations, and was fined $1.5 million in 2020 for child labor law violations in New York. Critics note that despite the "Food with Integrity" marketing, some ingredients remain genetically modified, and portion sizes are inconsistent. Nevertheless, Chipotle's revenue reached $10.8 billion in 2024, with net income of $1.5 billion and a market capitalization around $85 billion as of mid-2025, making it one of the most valuable restaurant chains globally.
