China National Petroleum Corporation

On September 17, 1988, the Chinese government established the China National Petroleum Corporation to separate commercial oil operations from state regulatory duties. This restructuring replaced the former Ministry of Petroleum Industry and created a massive entity headquartered in Beijing's Dongcheng District. The company now manages an integrated network spanning upstream exploration, downstream refining, petrochemicals, and global oilfield services.

CNPC stands as China's largest producer of crude oil and natural gas with a footprint reaching into Central Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and North America. Its financial scale is immense; the corporation ranked fourth on the Fortune Global 500 list in 2022 based on total revenue. Despite this dominance, its environmental impact remains significant. In 2024, the company reported approximately 655 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, which represented roughly 1.7% of global output that year.

Recent years have seen the company pivot toward energy security and diversification amidst complex geopolitical tensions. By April 2026, CNPC pledged to stabilize China's oil supply during the Iran crisis while simultaneously expanding green capabilities. In November 2025, it inaugurated a dedicated power unit in Beijing to drive new energy initiatives. The firm also secured fuel agreements with Kyrgyzstan in August 2026 following high-level talks in Xinjiang. [edit]
