About
Chevrolet, commonly shortened to Chevy, is an American automobile brand owned by General Motors. It was founded on November 3, 1911, in Detroit, Michigan, by Swiss-born race car driver Louis Chevrolet, his brother Arthur, and William C. Durant, who had recently been ousted from General Motors. Durant used the new company as a strategic vehicle to regain control of GM, completing a reverse merger in 1918 that made Chevrolet a division of the corporation. Under Alfred Sloan's vision of "a car for every purse and purpose," Chevrolet grew into GM's volume leader, competing directly with Ford's Model T and eventually outselling Ford by 1929.
Today, Chevrolet maintains one of the broadest lineups in the industry, spanning subcompact cars to medium-duty trucks. Key models include the Silverado full-size pickup, the Equinox and Traverse SUVs, the Trax subcompact SUV, the Colorado midsize pickup, and the iconic Corvette sports car, now in its mid-engine C8 generation. The brand's small-block V8 engine has become a cultural touchstone, representing American performance and engineering. In the electric vehicle space, Chevrolet offers the Blazer EV and Equinox EV, part of GM's broader electrification strategy.
Chevrolet's global footprint has shifted over the years. It was reintroduced to Europe in 2005 as a value brand but withdrawn in 2016, except for the Camaro and Corvette. In Oceania, it returned in 2018 after a 50-year absence, initially through Holden Special Vehicles and later through General Motors Specialty Vehicles. In South Korea, Chevrolet replaced the Daewoo brand after GM acquired full ownership in 2011. Despite these shifts, Chevrolet remains one of the most recognizable car brands in the world, competing with Ford, Toyota, Honda, and others across nearly every segment.
