Charles Melton is an American actor known for his transition from fashion model to critically acclaimed performer. Born on January 4, 1991, in Juneau, Alaska, he gained widespread visibility as Reggie Mantle on the CW series Riverdale, a role he played from 2017 to 2023 across seven seasons. His performance in Todd Haynes' 2023 film May December marked a turning point, earning him nominations for a Golden Globe and a Critics' Choice Award. In 2026, he starred in the second season of the Netflix anthology Beef, which brought him a Primetime Emmy nomination. Melton has appeared in over a dozen film and television productions, steadily building a reputation for choosing emotionally demanding roles. He is also known for his advocacy for Asian-American representation in Hollywood and his interest in developing his own production company focused on diverse stories. Standing at 6 feet 2 inches, he is often recognized for his tall frame and dark hair. His career trajectory from athlete to model to actor has been widely covered in media, with publications like Variety and GQ featuring him as a rising talent.[edit]

Melton grew up in Manhattan, Kansas, after his family moved from Juneau, Alaska, when he was young. He attended Kansas State University on a football scholarship, playing as a defensive end for the Wildcats. His plan to pursue a professional football career ended when he suffered a neck injury that forced him to leave college without graduating. Without a degree and uncertain of his next move, he relocated to New York City. While walking down the street, he was scouted by a modeling agency and soon signed with Wilhelmina Models. He appeared in campaigns for DKNY, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Armani Exchange. Modeling led to small commercial roles and eventually guest spots on television. His first on-screen appearance was a guest role on Glee in 2014, followed by a part in American Horror Story: Hotel in 2015. These early credits helped him secure representation and build the foundation for his acting career. He was a competitive football player before his injury, and his athletic discipline later informed his acting approach. He has stated in interviews that football taught him discipline while acting taught him vulnerability.[edit]

Melton's breakthrough came in 2017 when he was cast as Reggie Mantle on Riverdale, replacing Ross Butler who left due to scheduling conflicts with 13 Reasons Why. He played the role for 109 episodes over seven seasons. In 2019, he starred opposite Yara Shahidi in the romantic drama The Sun Is Also a Star, his first major film lead. The film grossed $7.4 million worldwide against a $9 million budget. His career-defining performance arrived in 2023 with Todd Haynes' May December, in which he played Joe Yoo, a man who as a teenager was sexually abused by a teacher and later married her. The film premiered at Cannes and was acquired by Netflix. For this role, Melton received nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor and the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Supporting Actor. In 2026, he starred in season two of the Netflix anthology series Beef, earning a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series. He also voiced a character in the animated film The Tiger's Apprentice in 2024. He is rumored to be attached to an untitled drama project with director Ari Aster, though not officially confirmed.[edit]

Melton is often described as effortlessly cool, favoring tailored suits, streetwear, and vintage pieces. His tall frame and sharp jawline are frequently noted in fashion media. Initially seen as a teen heartthrob from Riverdale, his role in May December prompted critics to reframe him as a serious dramatic actor. In interviews, he is thoughtful, reserved, and articulate. On Instagram, he mixes professional photos, behind-the-scenes shots, and personal moments with his dog and family. His social media voice is warm and appreciative, and he often shares mental health resources. Fans create edit videos of his work and organize online watch parties for new releases.
