Overview
Origin Story
Varys was born a slave in the Free City of Lys. As a child, he was sold to a traveling mummer's troupe, where he learned the arts of disguise and performance. Later, a sorcerer purchased him and performed a dark ritual that involved cutting him, leaving Varys a eunuch. Varys eventually killed the sorcerer and fled. He spent years in the cities of Myr, Pentos, and Lys, honing his skills in thievery, espionage, and information gathering. He built a network of informants, many of them orphaned children he called his little birds, who could move unnoticed through the streets. His reputation for knowing secrets reached King Aerys II Targaryen, who appointed him Master of Whisperers. Varys served on the small council through the Mad King's reign, Robert Baratheon's rebellion, and the subsequent rule of Joffrey and Tommen Baratheon.
Personality
Varys is soft-spoken, patient, and inscrutable. He rarely shows emotion, speaking in a measured, almost conspiratorial tone. His defining trait is a deep-seated belief in serving the realm, not any particular ruler. He claims to act for the good of the common people, a motive that sets him apart from most other players in the game of thrones. He is ruthlessly pragmatic and willing to sacrifice individuals, even allies, for what he sees as the greater good. Despite his cunning, he forms genuine attachments, particularly to Tyrion Lannister, and shows a protective streak toward the children in his network.
Story Arc
In A Game of Thrones, Varys is introduced as the Master of Whisperers under King Robert Baratheon. He aids Ned Stark in investigating Jon Arryn's death but ultimately betrays Ned to Cersei Lannister, believing that Ned's honor would lead to chaos. After Joffrey's execution of Ned, Varys remains in King's Landing, serving the Lannisters. He secretly helps Tyrion Lannister escape execution after Joffrey's murder, then flees to Meereen to join Daenerys Targaryen. In the TV series, he becomes an advisor to Daenerys but grows disillusioned with her violent methods. He attempts to poison her but is discovered and executed by Drogon. In the books, Varys remains in Westeros, orchestrating the return of Aegon Targaryen, a supposed surviving son of Rhaegar, to claim the Iron Throne.
