Tyrion Lannister

Tyrion was born the third child of Lord Tywin Lannister and his wife Joanna, who died in childbirth. His father never forgave him for her death, and his sister Cersei blamed him for killing their mother. Growing up as a dwarf in the most powerful family in Westeros, Tyrion faced constant mockery and abuse. At age thirteen, he fell in love with a common girl named Tysha and married her in secret. When Tywin discovered the marriage, he forced Tyrion to watch as his guards raped Tysha, then told him she was a whore paid for the act. The trauma left deep scars and a lifelong bitterness toward his family.

Denied his birthright of Casterly Rock, Tyrion turned to books and wit as his weapons. He traveled widely, learning the ways of the world, and developed a reputation as a heavy drinker and a sharp-tongued cynic. In A Clash of Kings, Tywin appoints him Hand of the King in King's Landing, where he must govern a chaotic court under the sadistic Joffrey. He proves a capable administrator, using cunning to prepare for Stannis Baratheon's assault. At the Battle of the Blackwater, he leads a daring sortie with wildfire, saving the city, but is wounded and later stripped of credit by his father.

After Joffrey's murder at his wedding, Tyrion is framed and put on trial. Shae, his lover, testifies against him. He demands a trial by combat, loses when Oberyn Martell is killed, and is sentenced to death. Jaime frees him, but before escaping, Tyrion confronts his father in the tower of the Hand. He finds Shae in Tywin's bed and strangles her, then shoots Tywin with a crossbow while he sits on the privy. This patricide marks his breaking point: he flees to Essos, bitter and vengeful.

In the television series, Tyrion travels to Meereen and becomes Daenerys Targaryen's Hand. He advocates for peaceful conquest and tries to curb her violent impulses. After the destruction of King's Landing, he resigns in disgust and is imprisoned by Daenerys. Following her death, he is named Hand of the King to Bran Stark, his final position. In the books, his arc is incomplete, but he has become a darker, more nihilistic figure, serving as an advisor to Daenerys while nursing personal grudges.[edit]
