Overview
Origin Story
Soldier Boy, born Ben in 1919, was the son of an abusive industrialist father. During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and volunteered for Frederick Vought's secret Compound V experiment, becoming the first American non-aging Supe. He was presented as a wholesome war hero, leading the superhero team Payback during the Cold War. In the 1980s, during a mission in Nicaragua, his own team, including Crimson Countess and Black Noir, betrayed him and handed him over to the Soviet Union. He was imprisoned and experimented on for forty years, developing a new ability: an energy beam from his chest that can negate Supe powers.
Personality
Soldier Boy is a volatile mix of 1940s American masculinity, macho confidence, and deep-seated trauma. He is vulgar, arrogant, and chauvinistic, but also deeply insecure, craving the adulation and respect he once had. His public persona as a wholesome patriot contrasts sharply with his private violent outbursts. He is driven not by a desire to save people but to reclaim his past glory and settle old scores.
Story Arc
Introduced in Season 3 of the TV series, Soldier Boy is accidentally freed by the Boys, who initially seek him as a weapon against Homelander. A major revelation is that Vought used Soldier Boy's sperm to create Homelander, making them father and son. This establishes a deep generational conflict. Soldier Boy's journey is one of revenge against his former team and a struggle to adapt to the modern world. He ultimately becomes a destructive force, nearly killing Homelander before being subdued and returned to cryogenic storage.
