Sandor Clegane

Sandor Clegane was born the younger son of House Clegane, a landed knightly house sworn to the Lannisters. When he was seven, his brother Gregor shoved his face into a brazier for playing with one of Gregor's discarded toys, leaving the left side of his face hideously scarred. Their father lied about the incident, claiming the bedclothes caught fire. Sandor later killed his father for the lie. He became a knight in Lannister service, though he refused the title of Ser, viewing knighthood as a sham. His reputation as a brutal killer earned him the nickname "the Hound," and he served as Joffrey Baratheon's sworn shield.[edit]

Sandor projects a cynical, misanthropic exterior, openly contemptuous of knights, nobles, and the gods. He believes the world is cruel and that only the strong survive. Yet beneath the gruffness lies a hidden moral code: he protects the weak when it costs him nothing, despises hypocrisy, and shows unexpected tenderness toward Sansa and Arya Stark. He later kidnaps Sansa during the chaos of Joffrey's death, taking her to the Eyrie, but fails to ransom her. Captured by the Brotherhood Without Banners, he demands a trial by combat and wins, only to be robbed and left for dead by Arya Stark. In the show, he is rescued by a septon and finds peace working at a sept, but is drawn back into violence when the Brotherhood recruits him. He reunites with Arya and becomes a surrogate father, helping her massacre the Freys.
