Revy

Revy was born Rebecca Lee in Manhattan's Chinatown to Chinese immigrant parents. Her childhood was a nightmare of poverty and abuse. Her father, a violent drunk, regularly beat her and her mother. By age eight, Revy had taught herself to shoot using a discarded revolver and tin cans. At fourteen, she shot and killed her father during one of his rages. She fled into the streets, surviving as a prostitute and small-time criminal in Hong Kong and other Southeast Asian ports. Her proficiency with guns caught the attention of the Triads, and she eventually fell in with the Lagoon Company, a crew of mercenary smugglers based in Roanapur, Thailand.[edit]

Revy is a walking contradiction: a cold-blooded killer with a fierce loyalty to her crew, a nihilist who craves meaning, a woman who hates herself but protects Rock with ferocity. She lives by a simple code: kill or be killed. She is quick to anger, prone to sadistic glee in combat, and drinks heavily to numb her trauma. Yet beneath the bravado lies a deep well of self-loathing and a desperate need for validation. Revy's arc begins with her as a ruthless, hedonistic thug who delights in mayhem. The arrival of Rock Okajima, a hostage who chooses to stay with the Lagoon Company, sparks a slow transformation. In the "Greenback Jane" arc, her rivalry with assassin Shenhua reveals her competitive pride. The "Fujiyama Gangsta Paradise" arc forces her to confront her past with Chang, her former mentor and lover, and she nearly dies protecting Rock. The turning point comes in the "Japan Arc," where she accompanies Rock to his homeland. There, she witnesses the emptiness of her own life compared to Rock's ties to family and society. She begins to question her nihilism, though she never fully abandons her violent nature. By the series' current point, she remains a killer but now fights with a glimmer of purpose, protecting Rock and the fragile humanity he represents.[edit]

Revy is widely regarded as one of anime's greatest female antiheroes. She consistently ranks high in popularity polls, placing 4th in the 2020 Newtype character popularity poll for female characters. Critics praise her for subverting the 'damsel in distress' trope, presenting a woman who is both terrifying and emotionally vulnerable. Her design and attitude have influenced later characters in the 'gunslinger girl' subgenre, such as Rail Tracer from Baccano!. Black Lagoon's global sales of over 5 million copies are driven in large part by her popularity.
